Child dies in Yambio after being knocked down by car

A two-year-old child who was knocked down by a car in Yambio town, Western Equatoria State, on Thursday has died.

A two-year-old child who was knocked down by a car in Yambio town, Western Equatoria State, on Thursday has died.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, the State Traffic Police Traffic Deputy Director, Col. Morris Bakura, said the incident happened at the Baiparu Residential area in Yambio County.

 “The child was two years old, and his name was Jackson. When the accident happened, the child was taken to the hospital and later died after three hours. The child was with others playing on the road while the vehicle came and knocked him accidentally,” he explained.

The traffic police officer revealed the vehicle involved in the deadly accident belongs to the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.

“The driver, who is called Wilson Martin, 26, is in police custody together with the impounded car waiting for investigations,” he said.

Car accidents are not common in Yambio County.

According to the South Sudan road traffic and safety law, any person who causes the death of another by driving a vehicle on a road recklessly or at speed or in a manner dangerous to the public, commits an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years, or compensation or both.
