Local leaders in South Sudan's Kapoeta State call on state authorities to conduct a state-wide disarmament exercise to enhance peace and stability in the state.

About 300 chiefs from across Kapoeta state took part in a 4-day peace and reconciliation workshop organized by the state peace and Reconciliation commission to discuss the state of security in the region.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday during the conclusion of the workshop, the head of the Peace and Reconciliation Commission in Kapoeta state, Thomas Lokai, said the workshop discussed the issues of cattle raiding, theft and revenge killings among the Toposa, Buya, Didinga and Jieh communities.

Lokai notes that the resolutions of similar peace workshops have not been implemented due to the availability of arms in the hands of civilians.

He added that the chiefs stressed the importance of disarmament for peace and stability to prevail among the communities.

Lokai further urged communities to respect resolutions reached by the conference and seek peaceful means of resolving differences.
