The livelihoods of vulnerable families have been hardly hit by steep rises in the price of charcoal at the market in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, several traders said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, several charcoal vendors attributed the rising price to heavy rains during this year’s rainy season in Khartoum, while citizens attributed the problem to skyrocketing prices of cooking gas, prompting many families to use charcoal and firewood for cooking.

The citizens revealed that the price of a sack of charcoal increased from 300 SDG to 350 SDG. Some citizens predicted further increase of charcoal prices during Eid al-Adha.

Separately, prices of some essential commodities have also increased dramatically at the market in Khartoum city, according to local residents.

The price of a quarter of onions increased from 27 SDG to 38 SDG within one week, while the price of a quarter of chickpeas increased from 125 SDG to 144 SDG.
