Chamber of Commerce in Wau threatens to impose price controls

The Chamber of Commerce in South Sudan’s Wau town have threatened to inspect all imported goods and commodities in the market as a way to control soaring prices.

Speaking to the press, Chairperson of the Chamber of Commerce in Wau Wol Charles expressed his astonishment at the drastic rise in price of goods in Wau town in comparison to last week.

He said in less than a week the prices of goods rose to an unacceptable level. Wol pointed that a sack of sugar rose to over 400 SSP, while one kilo of sugar is 60 SSP instead of 40 SSP last week and the price of flour and other commodities also rose.

He revealed that there is coordination between the chamber of commerce and the economic section of the National Security Service to intervene in order to investigate the cost of imported goods by the traders to know what the 'real price' should be and control it.

“We as the chamber of commerce and the economic section of the National Security will intervene to inspect all goods and ask traders how they got the goods and where are their papers. We did not hope to reach this level but the with this situation where the price are rising every day will go to you traders and ask you to present the document of which you imported your goods to get the exact cost. This is not to set up a new tariff,” said Wol.

“This is a clear message to traders if there is rise in price we will come to your shop and ask you to present to us the document of your goods that you brought,” he added.
