The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), a non-profit national organization, paid a visit to the inmates of the Women Prison in Juba on Friday.
The leading civil society group, led by Edmund Yakani, donated 50 mattresses and 100 sheets for the comfort of the female inmates at the prison.
“Red Cross had renovated the women department and donated about 50 beds, so as an organization we saw that we should complete the donation by donating 50 mattresses and 100 sheets,” Yakani said.
The rights defender said their donation will continue in other areas. “The donation is part of our role in promoting human rights. We are part of this community, so we have to help improve the current situation of the prisoners,” he said.
In her appreciation speech, Atong Jok, the Director of Women Prison said female inmates were complaining about lack of their basic needs, pointing out that the women prisoners need water.
She called on all good- spirited individuals and organizations to donate items needed by the female inmates at the prison in Juba.
Atong also said the facility was in dire need of water tanks and hygiene items.
Stella Felix, a female prisoner in Juba, appreciated CEPO organization for donating mattresses and sheets to them. “I thank CEPO for giving us mattresses and sheets, so we are very happy,” she said.
