CEPO calls for protection of IDPs returning to Juba neighborhoods

A leading civil society organization in South Sudan has called on the relevant authorities to provide full protection to internally displaced people (IDPs) who will be returning back to their homes in Juba.

This comes after the SPLA army and the Popular Committee for Peace-building urged the conflict-displaced people who are sheltering inside the UN camp to return back to their homes in Juba. The committee announced that it managed to vacate about 1,600 homes belonging to the conflict-displaced people that were occupied illegally in Jebel Dinka area.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, Edmund Yakani, Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), said the conflict-displaced families whose houses were occupied by squatters after the outbreak of war in 2013, need to be protected when they decide to return back to their homes in Juba city.

Yakani pointed out that the returnees will definitely face enormous challenges as they return to settle in the city, saying some of their houses were destroyed completely.

The leading civil society activist stressed that there should be a mechanism for protection involving the internally displaced people themselves.
