South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State Governor, Gen. Augustino Jadalla Wani, has relieved the Juba city council mayor of her duties.

Jadalla, in a gubernatorial decree issued on Wednesday evening, said the removal of Flora Gabriel Modi from the position of mayor would take immediate effect.

Modi was appointed the Mayor of Juba City by former governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony in October 2023.

“Governor Augustino Jadalla Wani has today issued a Gubernatorial Decree for the relieve of the Mayor of Juba City Council (JCC) Central Equatoria State, 2024 AD,” partly reads the decree.

The decree did not give reasons why Mayor Flora was removed.

In another decree, Governor Jadallah appointed Johnson Swaka as the new mayor of the Juba City Council.

The governor sacked the deputy mayors, including Mogga Franco Wani, Deputy Mayor for Administrative and Finance; Thiik Thiik Mayardit, Second Deputy Mayor for Social Services; and Emmanuel Juma Dayo, Third Deputy Mayor for Environment and Waste Management. The governor announced no replacements.

The state governor did not give reasons for the changes, only citing gubernatorial powers enshrined in the Constitution and provisions of the Local Government Act.
