A small cemetery beside the village of Madingjokthiang near Aniet market in the Abyei Area has upset residents as people have been using it to bury bodies in poorly dug shallow graves.

Residents have been complaining about the smell from these graves. Ngor Mariaw Ajak said that he has even seen illicit burials at night.

“There is no monitoring at night, one a time I had witnessed drunken young people burying dead bodies at this cemetery while I was passing by I stopped for a while and I thought to myself that this cemetery must be monitored… the community police should watch those who come for burial at night,” he said.

Authorities have reportedly identified three new burial sites in order to move the burials away from the community, but the new sites have not yet opened them to the public.
