Cattle transfer between Rizeigat and Maalia tribes cools tension

The Rizeigat and Maalia tribes in Sudan’s East Darfur exchanged stolen cattle from the Abu Jabra and Abu Karina localities on Monday, according to the acting Commissioner of Adela locality, Assim Mohammed Othman.

The transfer cools tensions after a series of cattle raids. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Thursday, Assim said the situation in the area was calm after the trade of nearly 1000 cattle stolen in cattle.

“We have recovered all the stolen cattle and each side has received its cattle the day before yesterday. Our brothers in Abu Jabra handed us 517 cattle and we handed them the same number of cattle” said Assim.

Cattle raiding caused tensions last week in the border areas between Abu Jabra, Abu Katina and Daein localities and were nearly led to the renewal of tribal clashes between Rizeigat and Maalia tribes. Local officials and security organs stepped in before the conflict could fester.

Assim claimed that accessing the stolen cattle and their exchange has been made by the cooperation from a buffer force nestled between the two sides.
