Trading between Dinka and Nuer living in neighboring Unity and Lakes states has restarted this month after being cut off by South Sudan’s ongoing fighting.
Lakes’ Rumbek Centre County and Unity’s Panyijar County were engaged in the regular buying and selling of cows before fighting started last December.
Rumbek North County Commissioner Mawet Manuer told Radio Tamazuj that since they decided to restart the trade earlier this month, the only hindrance has been the poor road conditions.
“There was a real relationship among the two tribes at the bordering county of Panyijar and Rumbek Centre,” he said. “In fact, they intermarry with each other.”
He said he expects trade to pick up after roads dry up.
