Gunmen launched a cattle raid into Tonj North County on Saturday, killing seven people, wounding five and making off with nearly 200 cattle, according to local authorities.

The raiders attacked Jou village in Alabek payam of Tonj North County at 5:00 p.m., said county information officer Michael Mayiik, adding that afterwards they moved with the cattle toward Unity State.

“The attackers killed seven people immediately and drove away the cattle. Five sustained bullet wounds when they were following cattle,” he told Mayardit FM.

The official added that the raiders drove the cattle away while it was getting dark, preventing community police from rescuing the cattle.

After the attack the county commissioner redeployed more community police along the state border. The wounded people are receiving medical treatment at Ayak Akat clinic.
