Cattle raiders kill 2 in Duk County

Armed cattle raiders killed at least two people, including a woman, and stole an unspecified number of cattle in an attack in Jonglei State’s Duk County on Tuesday afternoon, local authorities said.

John Chatim Ruei, the commissioner of Duk County, told Radio Tamazuj that the assailants ambushed herders as they grazed their cattle in Patuet Village.

“A herdsman was killed, and a woman died in crossfire while collecting firewood,” Ruei said. “All the animals were taken, and the attackers are being pursued.”

Ruei condemned the attack and accused armed youth from the neighboring Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) of involvement.

He said another attack occurred later Tuesday in Pagak Payam, where cattle were stolen and one person was wounded.

“We condemn these repeated attacks and urge Pibor authorities to investigate,” Ruei said.

Multiple attempts to reach GPAA Information Minister Nyinginga Okanho Kiro for comment were unsuccessful.
