An outbreak of animal disease has killed around 10% of cattle in Turkei, Unity State in the last six months as South Sudan’s livestock crisis deepens.
The UN’s humanitarian wing OCHA said in its weekly situation report that “an estimated 35 per cent of cattle herds were affected by an unknown disease and about 30 per cent of the affected cattle have died between July and mid-December 2014.”
The report, available for download below, said that a rapid response team has been organized to address the outbreak.
The South Sudan Civil War has displaced millions of livestock in South Sudan and disrupted seasonal migration patterns, resulting in large outbreaks of animal diseases across the country as livestock densities increase.
Separately, OCHA said that over 1000 drugs have been released for treatment of livestock in Northern Bahr al Ghazal, 1610 vaccines have been sent to Jonglei, and 350 to Lakes to tackle the spread of animal diseases.
Vaccinations have also begun on dogs in Juba to prevent rabies.
