A mysterious disease has killed hundreds of cattle in some areas of Fashoda State in the last two weeks, the Pastoralists Union announced.

John Othow, the union’s chairperson in Fashoda, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that more than 380 cattle died from an unidentified disease in the past two weeks.

He further said the unknown disease is killing cattle in Lul, Dithuok, Kodok, Akurwa and Wadakona counties and expressed concern that the sickness will spread.

At present, no medical checks for the cattle were made and it increases the anxiety of cattle owners in the state, he said.

Othow called on NGOs to send a rapid response team to address the outbreak. “Cattle owners are worried because their cattle are dying,” he said.

Keeping livestock alive and healthy is vital in the world’s youngest nation, where most of the population depends heavily on cattle for their livelihood.
