Catholic radio staff briefly seized over suicide saga

Police briefly detained the Director of the Catholic Good News Radio, Rafael Makuei, and two of his staff for investigation after a security guard reportedly committed suicide in his cubicle at the station’s main gate in Rumbek, Lakes States.

The incident occurred on Sunday night.

Lakes State Police Spokesperson Maj Elijah Mabor Makuac, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that one of the Catholic Good News Radio security guards was early in the morning found hanging dead on a rope tied to the room he used to stay in.

Makuac said the report was given to the police who swiftly went to the scene and found that the guard had committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope.

“The body was taken to the Rumbek State Hospital for a postmortem and was later taken home for burial by the family, and the investigations were underway,” he said.

Makuac disclosed the police were still investigating the matter and had detained some individuals from the premises of his work place, who were later released.

The Medical Director of the Rumbek State Hospital, Dr Terran Madit Terran, confirmed receiving the body at 8am.

He said the initial investigations on the body pointed to a suicide.

The Chairperson of Lakes State Civil Society Organization Network, Angelina Adhel, regretted the incident at the Rumbek Catholic Radio Good News 89.0 FM.

“I went to the hospital to inquire more about why the gentleman committed suicide,” she said.

She said the victim was a gentleman that she had known well for a long time.

Adhel appealed to the entire government of Lakes State and the NGOs in the area to create more awareness among the residents.
