Internally displaced families continue to occupy schools operated by the Catholic Church in Wau town in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal State, affecting this year’s schooling, an administrator said.

Fighting in Wau town between the government forces and armed groups has resulted in the displacement of thousands of people from their homes.

Sylvester Owaj, Director of the Catholic Diocese schools in Wau town, told Radio Tamazuj that they intend to relocate the conflict-affected people from John Paul Primary School and secondary schools as well as Saint Michael School so students can resume their classes.

Owaj further said they have already notified the relevant authorities about their plan to resume work in the Catholic schools in Wau town by Monday. The administrator revealed that some humanitarian organizations started to establish IDPs camps within the Catholic Diocese to accommodate the conflict-displaced families.

For their part, the internally displaced people reported security fears and bad humanitarian situation in Wau town.

A displaced woman said their children should go to schools, while calling on the relevant authorities to find another place for them, saying government soldiers are still causing insecurity in Wau town
