A cargo plane skidded off a runway Friday morning at Renk airstrip in Renk County, located far north in the Upper Nile State.
The plane, an Antonov AN-26, lost control during the landing and went off the runway as a result of potholes, the pilot told Radio Tamazuj.
“The aircraft skidded off the runway because it had a tyre burst on landing due to the poor quality of the runway. The plane was coming from Juba,” he said.
The captain, who requested anonymity, said none of the crew members on board were hurt.
For his part, Renk Police Commissioner Gen. Manyok Jurkuch confirmed a cargo plane belonging to South Sudan Supreme Airlines, one of the few airlines in the country, lost control while landing at Renk airstrip.
Several pilots have recently complained about the poor quality of the airstrip’s runway.
