A campaign to counter stigma towards people living with HIV/AIDS in Jonglei was launched on Thursday, a government official said.

Achol Ayom, the deputy chairperson of South Sudan HIV/AIDS Commission, told Radio Tamazuj that the compaign aimed at creating awareness on unhealthy behaviors.

She further said the compaign also aimed at lobbying for funds to fight against the virus.

“We are here to encourage the state government to fight against AIDS by allocating money for HIV, and also not to threaten sex workers because if they go into hiding, they will not access services and this will make them get the disease and infect others,” she said.

She pointed out that at least seven people including 3 females out of 522 people tested positive the campaign since Thursday.

She called on the local youth to get tested for HIV/AIDs in a quest to curb the spread of the disease.

Achol revealed that the commission and the state health ministry will carry out a compaign against HIV/AIDS in villages and cattle camps in Jonglei during the dry season.
