Peter Deng, deputy head of the peace committee in Malakal PoC site in Upper Nile state, says that three women were raped by SPLA soldiers when they went out to gather firewood earlier this week.
“Three women were raped three days ago east of the PoC site in Malakal,” he said. “They were taken to the PoC hospital but they were in a good condition except one woman who was admitted to the hospital for some time but released after that.”
Deng told Radio Tamazuj that they reported the case to UNMISS which sent peacekeepers to help the women gather firewood but the SPLA soldiers rejected to have the peacekeepers present in the area, so they went back to the PoC site.
Separately, Deng called on UNMISS to intervene to ask the government to open the way between Wau Shilluk and the PoC site for the displaced to get food and other goods. He pointed out that there are shortages of consumer goods in the camp due to the closure of the road to Wau Shilluk on the west bank of the Nile.
JMEC leader Festus Mogae also yesterday called on the government to open the route to Malakal, saying that civilian movements were still restricted.
