Calm returns to Rumbek North after deadly clashes

Authorities in Lakes State have said that relative calm has returned in Rumbek North County after 14 people were killed and 20 others wounded when armed youths from the Luacjang community attacked the Pakam community last week.

The clashes occurred in the village of Alor of Rumbek North County.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the commissioner of Rumbek North County, Arop Kumbai Dhelbeny, said, “Although there are still some fears in the area, the situation is now relatively calm because there has not been another attack and killings.”

“I called the commissioner from Luacjang and I told him the names of the suspects who carried out the attack and on the following day the commissioner from Luacjang called me and informed me that he has apprehended two suspects in Awangthou village and the names of those two suspects are identified as Bith Gum Makony, Chuoc Nuer Majok, and the one still at large is called Mangany Deng Derder,” Commissioner Kumbai added.

He urged the two communities of the Luacjang and Pakam to cease inter-communal fighting which leads to unnecessary loss of lives.

The Police Commissioner in Lakes State, Major General Madut Ngor, said that security in the area is now normal.

“Today the situation is normal. There is no fight and there is no attack,” Gen. Madut said. “In the report I received, 14 people were killed. There were originally 9 killed but the 3 who were missing were confirmed dead. 2 were also killed the day before.”

The police boss said the 20 wounded victims are receiving treatment in Maper.

He urged both the Luacjang and Pakam communities to cease inter-communal clashes, revenge attacks, and cattle raiding between themselves.
