Calm returns to Maban and Melut areas after Igga’s visit

Calm has return to border areas between Dinka and Maban communities of Northern Upper Nile State after South Sudan’s Vice President James Wani Igga’s recent visit to the area.

Inter-communal clashes were reported at Kilo 10 area between Mabanese and Dinka youths at a border between Melut and Maban counties in August.

Maban Southwest County commissioner, Luk Saadallah Deng told Radio Tamazuj that calm had returned to the disputed area of Killo Ashara, after the Vice President’s visit in which he conducted a series of consultative meetings with community leaders aimed at finding the root causes of the conflict.

Saadallah further said SPLA forces and national security personnel have been deployed in the area to contain the situation.

He pointed out that the case has been handed over to the national government and both parties are waiting for a final communication, while calling for a peace conference between the two communities.
