Relative calm has been restored in Bor County’s Makuach Payam in Jonglei State following a violent altercation that left dozens injured last week.

The incident began as a dispute between two youths but quickly escalated into clashes involving young people.

According to Maj. Gen. Moses Machok Makuac, the Jonglei State Acting Commissioner of Police, the conflict erupted last week when tensions flared between two young men from the Hol and Waai sections of Konbeek Boma in Makuach Payam.

“The fighting has ceased and we are continuing to apprehend the suspected who caused the violence. Some of those we have arrested have been remanded in the central prison,” he stated. “We have also separated the fighting groups and the police have been deployed in between and no one is going to attack the other again.”

The clashes involved the use of sticks as weapons, resulting in injuries primarily to women and children.

The exact cause of the conflict remains unclear, but tensions escalated rapidly between the two young men from different sections.

Local authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and efforts are underway to prevent further violence. The community leaders have urged restraint and dialogue to address the underlying issues and prevent future confrontations.
