Call to merge Tumaini Initiative with 2018 Peace Agreement

The Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, has expressed skepticism about the Tumaini Initiative, suggesting that it be merged with the outstanding tasks of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.

Yakani called on the Tumaini delegation in Nairobi to show political responsibility by reaching compromises and building consensus.

“I urge you to seize this moment to demonstrate political responsibility through compromises and consensus for the benefit of the citizens and a successful political transition,” Yakani stated.

He emphasized that for South Sudan to move forward, the Tumaini Initiative must be integrated with the unresolved aspects of the 2018 Peace Agreement.

“The key to Tumaini’s success is merging it with the pending tasks of the R-ARCSS. We need to combine these two into a cohesive and implementable political framework that will transition the country from instability to stability,” Yakani added.

“Tumaini cannot succeed if we don’t merge the pending tasks of R-ARCSS to create an agreement for transitional process in the Republic of South Sudan,” he said.

The CEPO Executive Director further reiterated his commitment to championing merging the two agreements; thus, calling on President Salva Kiir to support the idea.

“I urge his Excellency the President and the members of the other political parties to support the merger. We will ask the opposition group, the United People Alliance, to support the merger. It is a last resort call from the citizens of South Sudan.”
