South Sudan’s Council of Ministers plans to discuss the recent call by the East African regional bloc IGAD to stop fighting and Kiir’s commitment to announce a unilateral ceasefire, a top government official said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Martin Elia Lomuro, said: “This is not a decision taken by the government; it was a resolution came up during the IGAD summit. So, it was just a proposal to the president and it will be presented to the cabinet to discuss how it can be implemented.”
In a communiqué issued following its 30th Extra-Ordinary Summit held last Saturday in Nairobi, IGAD called upon all factions to immediately stop the fighting in South Sudan. In response to this call, President Kiir agreed to announce a unilateral ceasefire and grant amnesty to those that renounced violence.
