A thief made off with 1,850,000 South Sudanese Pounds and 1,100 U.S. Dollars after breaking into a shop in Rumbek Market in the Lakes State capital on Tuesday night.

The police spokesperson in Lakes State, Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is investigating the case.

“We received information on Wednesday morning that unidentified criminals broke into the shop of a businessman in the market and stole SSP 1,850,000 and USD 1,100 USD,” he said. “Our security apparatus has been instructed to go and follow this money, identify and arrest the criminals, and investigate this unfortunate incidence.”

Maj. Mabor said a security team was patrolling the market but could not cover its entirety because it is big.

“It can happen because the thieves can monitor the movements of the soldiers on patrol and observe where they have gone before perpetrating a crime,” he explained. “I urge the business community to work with security personnel to check crime. Security is a collective responsibility that one person cannot handle. You need to volunteer information about suspicious activities to the police.”
