The financial challenges facing the security arrangements have led to delays in payment of incentives for the forces in training camps across the country, a military official said.

The financial challenges facing the security arrangements have led to delays in payment of incentives for the forces in training camps across the country, a military official said.

Lam Paul Gabriel, the deputy spokesman of the SPLA-IO, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the security mechanism formed to oversee implementation of the security arrangements is facing a budget deficit.

He pointed out that the security mechanism drew up a budget for funds to be disbursed to soldiers in military training camps in the coming months.

"The matter has been put into consideration, and the security mechanism will consider this in its first meeting after gathering information on the number of forces and ranks in the training camps," Lam explained.

According to Lam, the funds are to help soldiers to meet their needs and for their families.

The process of gathering government and opposition forces into training sites with a view to forming a unified army is a cornerstone of the 2018 peace agreement.

President Salva Kiir and opposition leaders have yet to create a unified army.
