The British Ambassador to South Sudan Jonny Baxter on Wednesday arrived in Western Bahr el Ghazal state capital Wau to meet the state officials over the humanitarian situation and peace implementation in the region.

The ambassador was accompanied by a high-level delegation including officials from the Norwegian and American embassies in Juba and was received by Western Bahr el Ghazal state governor Sarah Cleto.

Speaking to the press after a closed-door meeting with the governor after their arrival, Ambassador Baxter said he was delighted to meet the governor and listen to her plans.

“We were particularly interested in her plans and determination to ensure that there is peace in Wau which then allows people to return to being what we describe as the food basket of this part of South Sudan to give people in Wau the best chance to leave in the lives that they want to and indeed expectedly in the future,” he said.

On her part, the state governor Sarah Cleto welcomed the visit and described it as a positive mission by the embassies.

"I think this is one of the great opportunities to have the partners that are supporting the peace in South Sudan and for us in Western Bahr el Ghazal state, it is an opportunity to come and share with us our hopes and our vision for the future ensuring that the peace agreement is implemented,” she said.

The governor assured the visiting delegation that her government is working to implement peace through service delivery to the citizens.

“My motto is peace through service delivery and I had an opportunity to take about the different services that we are hoping to provide to our communities, what we have been doing so far in terms of bringing the community together, building social cohesion, and also building trust between the communities of Western Bahr el Ghazal,” Governor Cleto added.

The visit was organized by the International Organisation for Migration, IOM.
