Sudan’s capital Khartoum is facing a shortage of bread at bakeries due to a lack of flour in the area, multiple sources told Radio Tamazuj.
Several citizens in Khartoum’s suburbs complained about overcrowding of people at the bakeries and rising prices of bread. The citizens expressed concern that the situation could worsen further.
A citizen who was in front of a bakery in Hajj Yusuf area likened overcrowding of people at the bakeries to a stampede of pilgrims in Mecca. He pointed out that the bread shortage entered into its fourth day in Khartoum city.
Separately, several citizens in Al Gazira State reported bread shortage in various suburbs of Madeni town, saying most of the bakeries remained closed in the area. There were reports that only 10 of 723 bakeries were open. They attributed the problem to flour shortage in the town.
The citizens indicated that the flour shortage prompted them to use maize flour instead. They noted that a sack of corn has increased to 320 Sudanese pounds, while a loaf costs one pound.
