Authorities in South Sudan’s Warrap State said a 2-year-old boy was on Monday instantly killed by a speeding truck belonging to Africa Resource Corporation (ARC) at Mayen gumel block in Kuajok town.
Col. James Wol Tong, Warrap State’s traffic police director, while speaking to Radio Tamazuj Tuesday, identified the deceased toddler as Deng Mayai Mayot, 2, attributed the accident to speeding and said the errant driver had been apprehended.
“What happened yesterday (Monday) was that a young baby of two years was killed by a truck belonging to ARC at Mayen Gumel because the driver was speeding,” he said. “When we heard about it, we sent our officers to apprehend the driver, and the deceased’s body was given to the relatives for burial.”
Meanwhile, Ayok Chol Ayok, the Kuajok town mayor confirmed the incident and instructed ARC Construction Company drivers to only use designated roads in the town.
“I talked to ARC coordinator yesterday so that he talks to his drivers who speed to reduce their speed because we prohibited these big trucks from using internal roads,” he said. “You see that road near Kuajok FM 99.00 is for trucks which take soil from Khartoum Jadit and for the trucks working on Gogrial road, they can use this main road coming from Wau. I told them (ARC staff) to note this since I came to this office.”
