Police authorities at Maper Akot Aru in Aweil state are said to be investigating a woman and a boy following an incident where another boy drowned to death in a pool of water last month.

Area MP Santino Mayuat Ngong explained to Radio Tamazuj that the boy snatched a mobile phone and foodstuffs from a woman and after the woman cry out for help, then the boy ran toward a pool of water trying to cross to the other side but he drowned.

“The deceased snatched a mobile phone, flour and grind groundnut from a woman and tried to cross a pool of water locally known as ‘Apir’,” Ngong explained, referring to a big pool of water (hafir in Arabic) dug by Eyat road construction company in 2009 during roads construction.

“While in the middle of the water, something caught his legs inside and he was crying for help calling the name of a boy… who is now in police custody to come and help him. The boy ran to call people but when people arrived he was found dead. So the woman and the boy were arrested and they are now in a serious police investigation,” Ngong added.

Ngong pointed out that many people have died as a result of drowning in the pool calling on charity organizations to assist in fencing it.

“No, no there are statistics, too much statistics,” he said, before adding, “This ‘Apir’ actually has killed a lot of people maybe now the victim is number 20 since 2009.”
