An eleven-year-old boy drowned and died on Thursday morning in floodwaters in Malual Baai Payam of Aweil East County, officials say.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, the acting police commissioner in Aweil East County, Deng Chier, said the young boy drowned while playing with his peers on Thursday morning.

Chier said the police and residents managed to remove the boy from the waters and rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“A short while ago (Thursday) a boy called Kon Deng Mawein aged eleven years drowned in the waters. We took him to the hospital but he was dead,’’ said Chier.

Aweil East County Executive Director, Abraham Wiik Awan also confirmed the incident and cautioned parents and children to be careful of the floodwaters.
