Boreholes, petrol, and power lines pose risk in Kuajok market, officials say

Uncovered boreholes and toilets pose a risk to residents in Kuajok, local officials and citizens tell Radio Tamazuj.

Officials in Kuajok town of the proposed Gogrial state have registered more than 200 open boreholes and toilets in residential areas.

“We are now appealing to the owners of these holes to cover them up or face a fine of 150 SSP” said Santo Athuai, an officer from the Fire Brigade in a statement to local media. “These open holes become threat to the lives of people and animals”

Many of the holes are from houses of citizens who migrated following the split of Warrap into three different states, according to the local authorities.

“This is a concern and I’m personally affected because my neighbor has dug a toilet which is now uncovered, and the house is evacuated” said Abuk Garang Bak, a local resident. “It is a problem now to my children because if nobody is home with them, they escape and play there” she said “I want the government especially leaders of blocks to hold owners accountable”

Athuai also unveiled two plans concerning Kuajok market. First, people who sell petrol must move beyond the main market. Second, plans are underway to modify the local market’s power lines. Some are tangled, and others hang above shops, presenting a fire hazard.
