Citizens from the contested area of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan are once again able to travel to the Sudanese capital Khartoum direct from Abyei using the road through the north of the area after it was closed for more than five years due to the security situation in the contested area.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the paramount chief of Abyei Nyol Fagot Deng confirmed that a large number of citizens have traveled to Khartoum and continue to travel using the road, which runs up to Diffra then Mujlad on to Khartoum.
He pointed that the reopening of the road comes after the signing of a peaceful coexistence agreement in March which led to security stability in the area.
“Many people have traveled and are still traveling through the road from Abyei to Mujlad and Diffra. This has started since we signed a peaceful coexistence agreement in March,” said chief Fagot.
