Hundreds of local youth in Bor town on Tuesday protested the visit of the country’s First Vice President, Taban Deng Gai to their town in order to find amicable solutions to the ongoing conflict between Jongei and Boma states.
The local youth demonstrated outside the venue of the meeting between Gai’s delegation and state officials while chanting anti-peace slogans.
The protesters shouted that “no peace without our cattle and children back,” refusing to give any chance to the First Vice President Taban Deng.
Separately, the Governor of Jonglei Governor, Philip Aguer Panyang, briefed the visiting First Vice President on the security situation in the state, citing the recent road ambush between Gemeiza and Sudan-Safari and another cattle raid in Twic East over weekend.
“We have been sent to bring peace to greater Jonglei,” Taban Deng told the state parliamentarians and ministers.
“I could not come with all the committee members because of the insecurity situation, I have just heard along the Juba-Bor road. So, I came with two ministers, Michael Makuei Lueth and Awut Deng Achuil and other supporting staff,” he added.
Taban pointed out that the national government is fully responsible to provide protection to its citizens.
The government delegation headed by Taban Deng is expected to visit Pibor town today to hold meetings with the relevant authorities there in an attempt to persuade local youth from the two states to cease hostilities.
