Angry youth in Bor attacked three NGO vehicles this week after complaining about drivers being hired from other areas.
One attack happened on Friday when a vehicle belonging to International Aid Services was stopped by a group of young men who identified themselves as members of the drivers union in Jonglei State.
The attackers beat the driver, who sustained injuries on his head. The group also confiscated the vehicle but released it 45 minute after the Relief and Rehabilitation Community and UNOCHA intervened.
The same group also attacked two other vehicles belonging to Intersos and Health Link agencies.
Last month, drivers and youth in Jonglei State complained of being undermined and left out by NGO and UN agencies when it comes to hiring local staff as drivers.
In a letter dated 20th June 2016 also seen by Radio Tamazuj, the union expressed dismay over NGOs for hiring drivers from outside Jonglei State over locals.
“We don’t need to see them working anymore, we have given you period of 72 hours in Jonglei State,” the union said.
In the letter, the drivers union gave three days for the NGOs to address their demands.
