Bor: Young voices call for end to gender-based violence

In celebration of World Children’s Day, UNICEF Young Reporters in Bor of Jonglei State hosted an event on Wednesday to highlight the impact of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) on children. The event, focused on advocating for children’s welfare and rights, brought together children, youth leaders, local media, and community members for a day of informative sessions and engaging activities.

This year’s theme, “Listen to the Future!” emphasized the importance of amplifying children’s voices and encouraging them to speak out about the issues that directly affect their lives. Special attention was given to the effects of GBV and intimate partner violence, which disproportionately impact children’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Local “Youth Mamas,” survivors and advocates, shared their personal stories, shedding light on the far-reaching consequences of GBV on children.

Yar Solomon Ayuen, a pupil from New Sudan Primary School, spoke passionately about the need for awareness in ending GBV and combating climate change, particularly flooding.

“When people hurt each other, especially at home, it’s the children who suffer the most. We need to speak out, listen to each other, and make sure no child has to live through that pain,” Yar said.

Danial Magot Anyar, a Young Reporter and event participant, stressed the need for greater education on GBV in schools, as well as addressing the challenges of early and forced marriage. “GBV affects everyone, even if we don’t always see it. As young reporters, we want to tell the world that we are the future, and the future can’t be built on violence,” Anyar said.

Elijah Mayen, Director General of the State Ministry of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare, also spoke about the importance of education and the support from humanitarian partners across Jonglei and South Sudan.

“Children are the future of our nation. Let’s ensure that both girls and boys, including children with disabilities, have equal access to education,” Mayen said. “We appreciate UNICEF’s support and urge parents to play their part in ensuring a brighter future for their children.”

The event was not only about raising awareness but also about empowering young voices to actively participate in the ongoing fight against GBV.

UNICEF urged families, communities, and governments to prioritize the protection of children from all forms of violence, ensuring a safer and brighter future for the next generation.
