Traders in the town of Bor in South Sudan’s Jonglei State are complaining about rising burglary cases in Marol market at night.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, several traders said that thieves broke into shops at the market and stole goods of undetermined value.

The complaining traders said robberies had gone up in the recent past.

Martin Amin, a businessman in Marol market, said criminals made away with his goods worth 40,000 SSP on Monday.

“My shop was broken into in the morning. 11 jerrycans of cooking oil were stolen. This is a big lost for us because now we cannot compensate for the expenses incurred while transporting goods to Bor. This may lead to the collapse of our businesses,” he said.

Another businessman Mabior Kuol Ajok, who also serves as secretary for the state chamber of commerce, expressed his discontent about the rising  burglary cases while traders pay money monthly for police patrols.

The businessmen urged police officers to beef up security in the market as Christmas approaches.

Joe Alier, the police officer in charge of the night patrol at the market, admitted that there were rising cases of crimes. He vowed to provide security in the market after receiving complaints from several traders.
