Floodwaters have significantly receded in several neighbourhoods in Bor town of Jonglei State, allowing for residents, who were displaced to begin returning to their homes.
Bor town has been hit by heavy floods since July last year, forcing thousands of residents especially in the neighbourhoods of Nigel, Achengdiir, Lekyak, Hai Fangak, Malou, and Hai Muchuor out of their homes to the neighbouring states.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, several residents said they began returning to their homes in May as floodwaters significantly receded following the construction of the dyke and roads within the town.
Yar Manyang, one of the residents, said: “I was displaced to Block 3 area when the floods started. But as we speak, people are back to their homes. For us in Moldor, these roads have saved us. No more floodwaters come to our residence from Hai Muchuor and I Fangak. Dyke has also helped us. “
A Bor resident, Mary Ayen, who returned to her home in Ngel after months appealed for help as livelihoods were destroyed by the floods.
“Yes, we started returning homes. The problem is that houses have collapsed in floodwaters. Iron sheets on the roofs have been taken. So, we have nothing at hands as we resettle,” she said.
For his part, Yuot Alier, the Bor County commissioner, admitted people have started returning homes over the past months. H pointed out the returnees remain in dire condition due to the lack of support.
