The director of Bor Central Prison has been suspended following a daring prison escape that saw at least four inmates forcefully freed by armed assailants in the Tibeek suburb on Saturday.
An eyewitness, Nyok Malet, reported via a WhatsApp group that members of the Hol Section of Duk County were responsible for the breach.
“Hol broke out their four jailed people in Tibek Maximum Prison,” he posted.
Gen. Bol Adoor, the chief of the National Prison Service in Jonglei State, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that he suspended Gen. Achiek Mach, the Director of Bor Central Prison, and said there is an ongoing administrative investigation into the incident.
“Yes! The director has been suspended and I am now investigating to establish what happened,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Gen. Mach confirmed to this publication that he had been suspended but declined to comment further.
“I am no longer at work… I am in my house,” he curtly stated.
The prison authorities are yet to provide details on the circumstances surrounding the escape of the four inmates or the identity of the armed individuals responsible for the prison break.
Residents in Bor expressed shock over the incident, highlighting fears about public safety and the ability of authorities to maintain law and order.
The local authorities urged the public to provide any relevant information that can assist in the apprehension of those responsible for the prison break.
