The police in Bor, Jonglei State, are investigating a case in which a woman died while being rushed to hospital after attempting to commit suicide by hanging, the state police spokesperson said.

Last weekend, a woman in her early 20s succumbed to injuries she sustained after trying to hang herself at a camp hosting the Jonglei flood-displaced community in Awerial County of Lakes state.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Major Majak Daniel Tuor, the state police spokesperson, said: “The incident took place in the Guolyar area of Lakes State on Sunday but the victim did not die on spot. She was rushed to Bor and later died there after some hours. Up to now, we are still investigating the reason for the suicide.”

The police officer pointed out that security personnel had been dispatched to the scene to assist in the investigation.

“Till now, no close relative of the victim has opened a case and come to us to narrate the incident. We dispatched our detective police personnel to meet the relatives so that investigation can be carried out,” he said.

Mingkaman Police Inspector, John Tiar Bol, confirmed the incident without providing details, saying no case has been opened with them.

For his part, Dr. Bol Chaw Manyang, the Bor State Hospital medical director, said the deceased succumb to complications developed from the suicide attempt before reaching the hospital.

“She died in a boat while being rushed to the hospital. These incidents of suicide depend on so many issues like economic, social, and even drugs. For example, we learned that this particular incident is related to a marriage issue. So, it is very unfortunate that suicides are occurring at a very alarming rate,” Dr. Chaw said.

He called on local communities and the government to address all the cross-cutting issues predisposing young people to suicide so that the cases reduce.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide is one of the leading causes of death, accounting for a 1.4 percent mortality rate globally.
