Police authorities in Bor town of Jonglei State said preparations are ongoing to beef up security in the town as Christmas approaches.
The state police commissioner, Joseph Mayen Akoon, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that necessary arrangements have been taken to ensure the safety of civilians and their properties during the festive season.
“As police, we are mandated to protect civilians and properties. Last year, our celebrations went on well. So this year, we hope there will be no problem because for us provision of protection and security is a continuous process. Arrangements are there. Our forces are providing patrols in the town,” Mayen said.
The senior police officer, however, pointed out that the situation at the outskirts of the town remains dire as they are unable to discharge their duties due to the floods.
A resident who identified himself as Simon Manyok said there are no gang crimes in the town as was in the past, but that the police should boost security in the surrounding villages.
“Within the town, we sleep and walk normally. People are busy preparing for Christmas celebrations. We want this spirit kept,” he said.
But an activist Jacob Achiek decried the security situation at the outskirts of Bor town, urging the government to beef up security ahead of the celebrations, warning that there may be a rise in crimes as Christmas approaches.
