Peter Akim Ajieth, the mayor of Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei state, said he has ordered health inspectors to travel around the town, shutting down restaurants and hotels that did not follow proper hygiene procedures in order to prevent spread of cholera in the town.

Peter Akim Ajieth, the mayor of Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei state, said he has ordered health inspectors to travel around the town, shutting down restaurants and hotels that did not follow proper hygiene procedures in order to prevent spread of cholera in the town.

Last week, more than 13 cholera cases were recorded in Greater Bor counties.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Peter Akim said any restaurant or hotel that did follow proper hygiene procedures would be shut down in the town.

“Of course this is a matter  of life and death, if we found a hotel that is not following our rules, then we have to be tough, we have to do what is needed that include fine or closure,” said Akim.

“What we are trying now is to make sure there are no flies around and safety tanks are emptied so that there are not flies to spread the disease,” he added.

The mayor  pointed out that the patients are being treated at Bor Hospital. He added that they are still investigating suspected cases of the disease in the town.
