The mayor of Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei state, Peter Akim revoked his earlier order that dissolved the bench court and reinstated the former court members in the state.

“In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under section 57 of the Local Government Act (2009), I peter Akim Ajieth Buny, the mayor of Bor town, do hereby revoke the order number 09/2017 regarding dissolution of the Bor town bench court and reinstate the bench court,” reads a statement broadcast on the local radio station on Friday.

On 29 May, the mayor issued a decision appointing nine new members to Bor town bench court after dismissing nine chiefs over alleged misconduct.

But the president of Jonglei’s High Court, Jairo Ajang Duot cancelled the decision taken by the Bor town mayor, accusing the mayor of violating Article 122 in the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan 2011.

The local court was set up to solve social and domestic disputes in the town.
