Bor mayor forms committee to resolve land acquisition disputes

The Mayor of Bor Municipality, Peter Akim Ajieth, on Friday set up a committee comprises of independent personalities to resolve land disputes in the town.

Speaking to the press, Ajieth said: “land disputes in the town have caused conflict and that needs a body to address it through a peaceful settlement.”

“We have formed a committee called Bor Municipal Council or Land Board to be responsible for land because of many land related disputes in the town,” he added.

Ajieth further said there are illegal selling and leasing of land in Bor town, causing land conflicts. The Major acknowledge that there are no proper procedures for land acquisition in Bor town.

The 2005 peace agreement with Sudan that culminated into South Sudan independence stipulated that land belongs to the community, making it hard for the South Sudanese government to regulate it.

In February this year, Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology issued a decision ordering more than 70 families to evacuate a piece of land it considered belongs to the university.
