The mayor of Bor Municipality in Jonglei State has banned the preparation and sale of locally brewed alcohol within the town, citing a rise in criminal activities.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, James Gai said the ban was made effective since last week.
“I banned local alcohol especially “aragi” and “siko” because they influence local youth to be involved in theft. Youth spent most of their time at local bars. They don’t go for work. And also we realized that these locally made alcohol is not safe for the health of people,” he said.
The mayor pointed out that he also banned alcohol consumption during working hours.
Mayor Gai said he directed members of the organized forces and chiefs to execute the order, warning anyone found in defiance of the order will be punished.
