The local authorities in Bor County in Jonglei State have said thousands of residents have been displaced from their homes in Jalle town by floods which occurred when the dyke built to protect the town broke on Saturday.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Majak Deng Kuany, the Bor County Executive Director, appealed to aid agencies to help repair the dyke, warning that the situation could worsen in the coming weeks.
“The dyke broke between Makueiyom and Panyac causing displacement and disrupting the fish business,” he said. “Around 15,000 people have been displaced to higher ground within Jalle center.”
For his part, Mading Akueth, the Jonglei State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) chairperson said they will convene a meeting with humanitarians on Monday to address the rising floodwaters which he said could cause widespread displacement and destruction in Bor and Twic East counties.
