Two abducted children were last week rescued by authorities in South Sudan’s Boma State, a local official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, the information minister in Boma state, John Kaka said the two children abducted from neighboring states were rescued from different parts of the state and handed over to their respective states in the country’s capital, Juba.

“One child was abducted from Jonglei State while another one from Bieh State. They were recovered in Kubal West and Pibor North counties. On Friday, they were handed over to the authorities of the two states,” he said.

Kaka said they are committed to ending child abductions, urging governors in the Greater Jonglei region to cooperate with Boma authorities in fighting cattle raiders and suspected abductors.

Jonglei authorities were not immediately reachable for comment.

On his part, Bieh State information minister, Peter Nin Tut, confirmed that they had received one of the abducted children from Boma authorities on Friday, reiterating their commitment to ending cattle raiding in the Greater Jonglei state.

The communities of greater Jonglei state have for long been wrangling leading to cattle raids and child abductions.

According to reports, child abduction has become a business in the region as kidnappers are able to take children during attacks and sell them for cattle to families who are unable to conceive.
