Body of child retrieved from well in Torit

The body of a four-year-old child was retrieved from a well at Hai Morwari, a residential area of Eastern Equatoria State capital Torit on Friday.

Local authorities said the body was taken to the Torit State Hospital for a postmortem.

Health reports indicated that there were no signs of drowning or falling into the well, indicating that the child was killed before being thrown into the well.

On Thursday, the body of a 59-year-old police officer identified as Clement Ladu was found floating on the Kineti River in the state capital.

Last month, an SSPDF soldier reportedly buried alive his daughter and beat the mother into a coma at the town’s Morwari residential area.

Morwari Sub-Chief Michael Obusuk said no arrest had been made following the incident.

Torit Mayor Mustafa Albino Zachariah confirmed the incident, saying it was a total violation of others’ rights by a criminal.

He revealed that a joint security investigation committee would be formed to probe the matter.

The Executive Director of Mother and Daughter support organization, Eunice Nakiru, condemned the act, calling on the government to investigate and hold the perpetrators accountable.

She said killing an innocent child was a gross violation, adding that children are the future leaders and their rights have to be respected.

“I condemned such an act because it is not only killing a child but also the future of South Sudan. The government should investigate the matter and hold the perpetrators to account,” she said.
