A motorcyclist ‘bodaboda rider’ has been arrested after an accident on Sunday that led to the death of a 68-year-old woman in Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria State.
The police say the woman died on Tuesday while receiving treatment and investigations have been launched following the accident that took place along the Torit-Magwi road.
“At around 7:30 along Magwi-Torit road, a motorcycle rider called Emmanuel Okumu 26 years of age was coming from Nimule residing in Panimu. So he was going home. The incident happened, he knocked an old woman of about 68 years of age causing a fracture on the woman seems there were also some internal injuries,” the inspector of traffic police in Magwi County 1st Lieutenant Ongee Jackson told Radio Tamazuj.
He said the police arrived at the accident scene and took the woman to Magwi Primary Health Centre after which she was further transferred to Torit Civil Hospital where she died.
Jackson cautioned motorists to avoid overspeeding and to observe traffic regulations to minimize road accidents.
“It is the responsibility of everybody who is using the road to always be vigilant when using the road because there are different types of people there. There are mad ones, the deaf who cannot hear, so the driver should be vigilant enough, follow the road procedures which can show you the speed limit which you are supposed to be using when approaching schools and residential places,” he advised.
Dr. Changa Thomas at the Torit Civil Hospital said the woman died of severe head injuries.
“The woman hit her head, so when we checked her she was not talking, she could not feel anything it is like she had a severe head injury that led to her being in a coma. We tried to manage her but she had a severe head injury and a fracture on the left side of her head,” he said.
Magwi authorities have recorded five road accidents and one death in January alone.
