Residents of the Guli area in al-Tadamon Locality in Sudan’s Blue Nile State are reporting an acute water shortage, prompting calls for action.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday last week, several local residents living in the Guli area said they have been experiencing an acute shortage of drinking water.
Ali Bashir, a resident of Guli, said that the population of the area could reach 35,000 and that they lack access to clean drinking water.
“People are suffering a lot due to a lack of water. The price of a barrel of water is 1,500 SDG, and people are also suffering due to the scarcity of bread,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Ali Al-Nur Abu-Dileiq, head of the Guli area’s construction committee, said that they tried to solve the problem by providing four water tankers that transport water from a distance of 27 kilometres.
He added that they had led an initiative through the Zakat Bureau to repair water reservoirs. He blames the problem on the Water Supply Authority and the Blue Nile government.
Ammar Al-Hajj Attia, the managing director of the Guli Unit, said that plans were underway to renovate water sources in the area.
“Water reservoirs need to be repaired, the plan is ready, and hopefully the work will start in the coming few days,” Ammar said.
